Dump truck accident causes life-threatening injuries

The cause of a motor-vehicle accident is not always immediately clear. There are hundreds of truck accidents every year on highways in and around Columbia, many resulting in life-threatening injuries or fatalities. Often times, negligence on the part of a driver involved in the crash, or equipment failure, offers an explanation as to what may have happened. Road conditions, faulty maintenance, and driver fatigue are just a few of the other factors that can contribute to the cause of an accident. A full investigation is generally necessary to best understand what events transpired and, when appropriate, assign responsibility.

Last month, a dump truck overturned on U.S. Route 63 north of the Mexican Gravel Road overpass. Two firemen from the Boone County Fire Protection Unit responded to the scene and were assisted by the Columbia Fire Department. The truck driver was transported to Columbia Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police were uncertain how the accident occurred, except to say the dump truck collided with a Pontiac Grand Am. The collision caused the dump truck to cross the median of Route 63, passing in front of all northbound traffic before rolling over onto its side. The driver of the Grand Am was not injured.

Asphalt and fuel from the dump truck were spilled onto the roadway, and emergency crews worked to clear the area and use an absorbent to soak up the leaked fuel. An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.

The victim will undoubtedly need all his strength to recover from the truck accident. As he recovers, it will be important for investigators to determine what prompted the accident. A number of methods, including witnesses and accident scene reconstruction may help.

Missouri personal injury law provides for compensation to be awarded for any injuries incurred due to the accident, as well as financial recovery for lost wages, particularly if the accident was caused by the negligence of another. A Columbia attorney experienced in personal injury law, as it relates to truck accidents, may help victims and their families to better understand their rights and options.
