One killed, another injured in Columbia car crash

Car crashes claim lives in Missouri and across the country every day. It becomes that much more tragic when the victim is a teenager or young adult. When the accident also includes the injury of another passenger, it is sometimes difficult to know how to react. All car crashes are terrible and family members are left hoping for recovery of injured victims. They are also often left with unanswered questions.

A 19-year-old Ashland man was killed on Route MM in Columbia on September 3. He lost control of his 1990 Honda in the early morning. According to a Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report, the man overcorrected and struck a utility pole. The man was declared dead at the scene. His 19-year-old passenger was rushed to University Hospital with what were initially reported as "moderate injuries." Authorities said both men were not wearing a seatbelt.

The incident will most likely alter the course of the passenger's life in a number of ways if he recovers from his injuries. However, it is important to remember he was not driving the car, was seriously hurt and will now have to navigate his way back to some semblance of the life he led before the accident. He may have to deal with immediate and future medical bills.

Personal injury law specifically recognizes the right of those hurt by car crashes through the negligence of someone else to be reimbursed for their injuries and pain and suffering. A Columbia attorney intent on helping victims stand up for their rights may offer some solace and assistance in obtaining a fair resolution.
