Fenton motorcycle-car accident kills biker, injures his passenger

A 21-year-old man lost his life on June 10 as the result of a two-vehicle accident on Highway 94 not far from Augusta. According to Missouri police officials, the man was operating his motorcycle at a high rate of speed when he did not yield for oncoming traffic. As a result, the man struck the side of a car, resulting in a car accident that threw both him and his passenger, a 21-year-old woman from Arnold, off of the motorcycle.

The man was pronounced dead shortly after the accident. Meanwhile, the woman was transported to a hospital to receive treatment for moderate injuries. The woman whose car was hit by the motorcycle did not sustain any injuries.

Police stated that all three individuals were wearing safety devices at the time of the accident. No other information has been released as to other factors that may have played a role in the accident. As a result, it is unknown exactly how fast the man was driving when the accident occurred.

When motorcycles and cars collide, it rarely turns out favorable for the motorcycle operator and any passenger. However, each motor vehicle operator in our state is expected to adhere to a duty of reasonable care toward others in the roadway, and that is a duty that extends to motorcyclists as well -- both to others sharing the highway and to the passengers who placed their faith in the hands of the operator. If drivers do not adhere to this duty of care, those injured by their negligence may have grounds for a civil lawsuit.
