Missouri truck accident takes 5 lives on Interstate 435

When smaller vehicles share the road with tractor-trailer trucks, there may always be the potential for an accident. Because of the vast difference in size, an accident involving a big rig can lead to extensive damages and severe injuries. This was the case after a recent Missouri truck accident occurred and several people lost their lives as a result.

A woman driver was on the interstate in the early evening around 5 p.m. Her car was stopped in the far lane but no one is certain as to why. A tractor-trailer came along from behind and hit the car. Reportedly, the car was crushed by the big rig.

Two of the vehicle occupants died at the scene of the accident. Three other people in the car died later at the hospital. Three children -- a 2-year-old, a 3-year-old and a 7-month old -- died as a result of the crash. One of the victims was the 24-year-old mother of the children and the other victim was a 17-year-old friend. The truck driver was cooperating ,and initial reports indicated alcohol or drugs were not a factor in the accident.

Investigators were working to determine if a mechanical problem or other issue caused the car to be disabled. The family left behind from this truck accident may be able to pursue claims for civil damages, dependent on the findings of an investigation. In Missouri, a wrongful death lawsuit may be appropriate if the evidence suggests the truck driver was negligent in a such a manner as to either caused the tragic wreck or materially contributed to its occurrence. In order to formally establish financial liability, the family will need to establish negligence by a preponderance of the evidence.
