Safety advocates warn about the Snapchat speed filter

Many Missourians use Snapchat to share videos with their friends and acquaintances. Snapchat offers filters that people can use to enhance their experiences while using its social media platform. Unfortunately, the Snapchat speed filter has increasingly been appearing as playing a role in deadly accidents.

The Snapchat speed filter allows users to post videos showing how fast they are moving. Some drivers have been using the filter to show their friends and family that they are traveling at high rates of speed. Safety experts warn that the filter is both distracting and that it encourages recklessness. Snapchat argues that it warns people not to use it while they are driving, but safety experts say that the warning is simply not enough.

In one illustrative case in Florida, a Snapchat speed filter user posted a video showing him reaching speeds of 115.6 miles per hour. Shortly afterward, the 22-year-old man lost control of his vehicle and collided head-on with a van traveling in the opposite direction. His vehicle burst into flames, killing him, his passenger and three people who were inside of the van, including a mother and two children. Safety experts argue that Snapchat needs to remove the filter, but the company has indicated it has no plans to do so.

People who suffer serious injuries that are caused by negligent drivers who are using Snapchat or other social media platforms may be able to recover monetary compensation by filing personal injury lawsuits. Drivers have a duty to drive cautiously and not engage in activities that distract their attention away from the act of driving. When they violate that duty, personal injury attorneys may try to hold them liable so that the attorneys' clients may be made financially whole by receiving damages in amounts that are fair.
