Car accident kills one, leaves another fighting for life

Recently there was a news report about a fatal morning car accident in Columbia involving three teenagers and a man in his 20s. The car accident took one life instantly and left another close to death.

On Sept. 3, a 19-year-old driver lost control of her Nissan Pathfinder while driving east on Blue Ridge Road. The car struck a curb, hit a telephone pole and flipped, sliding on its side some 75 feet.

The entire incident probably took no more than a few moments, but it left a lot of damage. A 26-year-old male passenger was killed instantly and a 19-year-old female passenger was rushed to University Hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver and a third passenger were hospitalized with moderate injuries from the car accident. The police are continuing to investigate, though they indicated they think speed and alcohol contributed to the crash.

All of the families will want to learn how the accident occurred and how it could have been prevented. Certainly the estate of the deceased victim and other victims seriously injured will want accountability. The law provides some measure of that in the form of monetary damages for injuries and pain and suffering.

In the case of the young man, money will not return him to his family, but it may deter any negligent party from future wrongful conduct and also send a message to other drivers that the lives of passengers in the motor vehicle they are driving are entrusted to them. In and around Columbia, a personal injury lawyer may help victims and their families sort out the details and pursue a fair resolution.
