Bicyclist in serious condition after being hit by van

Distracted driving may well be at the root of a tragic accident in Boone County in September. At approximately 7 p.m. on a Wednesday a 57-year-old man was struck by a vehicle on Missouri Highway 11 while riding his bicycle. The cyclist suffered serious injuries from the car accident and was airlifted to University Hospital in Columbia, Missouri.

The accident occurred when a Kirksville man was struck by a moving van as he rode his bike along the Boone County road. According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, the accident took place just west of Troy Hills. Both the van and the cyclist were traveling westbound when the van crashed into the bike and its rider. The driver of the van was not injured and it is not yet known if any charges were filed.

All motor vehicles operators in the state of Missouri assume a duty of reasonable care when they get behind the wheel. That duty extends to all others on the road, including pedestrians and cyclists.

Boone County residents and the victim's family members are undoubtedly concerned about the cyclist's condition, which was reported as serious at the time of the accident. A car accident caused by inattention can occur in a split second and when a bike rider is involved, serious personal injury is often the result. The victim and his family may benefit from consulting a Missouri attorney intent on helping people seriously injured due to the negligent actions of others. The attorney may provide answers to important questions and assist in seeking full legal accountability for any wrongful conduct causing or contributing to the accident.
