19-year-old driver killed in Columbia car accident

While New Year's is often a time of celebration, it is also a time of increased car accidents as many people are on the roads traveling to and from parties and events. For one family, the New Year began in the worst way possible.

A 19-year-old man died early Sunday morning after being involved in a car accident. According to police, he was driving a car that veered off the side of Route Z and collided with a tree. The Boone County Medical Examiner pronounced the Columbia teen dead at the scene.

There was a passenger in the teen's vehicle at the time of the crash. An 18-year-old woman was riding in the car as well. She was taken to University Hospital in serious condition.

While the cause of the crash has not yet been determined, a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper said speed and wet road conditions may have contributed to the collision. Toxicology reports are being processed to determine if alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Car accidents can happen in the blink of an eye. What often goes unreported is the fact that those directly involved in the crash are often not the only ones affected. The families of both teenagers involved in this crash may be struggling to cope with the collision. While one family may be mourning the loss of a son, another may be hoping their daughter recovers from the serious accident.

Unfortunate incidents like this shed light on the serious consequences of a car accident. Hopefully this accident will prompt local drivers to practice safe driving in an effort to avoid such tragic incidents.
