Monroe County car accident victim, 17, seriously injured

Unfortunately, not everyone heeds to police warnings. Sometimes this doesn't cause trouble to anyone other than the person disobeying authority. However, when some attempts to elude police by speeding away, others can be put in harm's way. One such incident, a car accident in Monroe County, sent a 17-year-old victim to University Hospital in Columbia with serious injuries on Feb. 24.

The events began to unfold in the eastbound lanes of U.S. 24 near the Route YY interchange. A Missouri State Highway Patrol officer observed a Dodge Durango traveling at approximately 60 miles per hour when it crossed the center line. Activating emergency lights and siren, the officer pursued the Durango as it increased its speed. The chase continued into Monroe County where the suspect was observed weaving between both lanes of traffic on U.S. 24 near Highway 15. The Durango then struck a Chevy Malibu, injuring its young female driver.

The suspect was also injured and was himself transported to the same Columbia hospital, where he was treated for moderate injuries and released to custody of the authorities. No further word on the medical condition of the car accident victim was immediately available. The suspect, also age 17, was being held in the Monroe County jail pending formal charges of resisting arrest, DUI, speeding and other violations.

The first concern is for the full recovery of the innocent victim, and her family will undoubtedly want to know exactly what occurred. They will likely await the results of the formal police investigation already undertaken by the state patrol's Major Crash Team. The victim may wish to pursue a personal injury action for monetary damages against all parties whose negligence caused or contributed to the accident.
