3 children killed, 7 injured in Missouri boot heel crash

A blown tire is said to be the cause of a May 13 single-vehicle rollover that killed three children and injured seven more people. The accident occurred near Hayti, a town in the boot heel of Missouri. Police officials stated that the car accident occurred when the vehicle, which was traveling south on Interstate 55, blew out one of its tires, causing the vehicle to leave the road and roll over several times.

None of the 10 occupants were wearing seat belts, and none of the children were seated in a child restraint seat. As a result, all 10 occupants were thrown from the vehicle. Two of the children who died were 13 and 10 years old, while the other child was just an infant. The seven other occupants all sustained serious injuries and their medical conditions are currently unknown. Meanwhile the driver and other adults in the vehicle have not been identified, and it is unclear at this point whether criminal charges will be filed.

The enforcement of children wearing proper safety restraints is a very serious issue. In many cases the proper use of seat belts can be the difference between sustaining minor injuries and being seriously injured or killed. Ultimately the responsibility lies on the adults who are riding in the car, and in particular the driver, to ensure that all children are properly seated and restrained.

One can only hope that this tragic car accident will serve as a reminder to the many Missouri adults who transport children each day that leaving a child unrestrained while traveling in a motor vehicle could have devastating consequences.
