Motorcycle read-ends truck, leaving 1 dead, 1 injured in Missouri

A two-vehicle accident that occurred on May 30 has left one man dead and a woman in critical condition. According to Missouri police, the truck accident occurred at around 7:40 p.m. when a truck driven by a 52-year-old man was slowing to make a left-hand turn off of Highway 22 in Audrain County.

While the truck was slowing down, the motorcycle, operated by a 48-year-old man, hit the rear end of the truck. The operator of the motorcycle and his passenger, a 41-year-old woman, were thrown from the motorcycle. As a result of the impact, the motorcycle burst into flames.

Witnesses have stated that the motorcycle may have been speeding when the accident occurred. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, while the woman was airlifted to University Hospital where she was admitted to the intensive care unit. No further information has been released as to her condition or the precise extent of her injuries. Meanwhile, the operator of the truck escaped without sustaining any injuries.

Missouri police are still investigating the tragic truck accident and have released no further details as to its cause. Unfortunately, in cases involving a motorcycle, regardless of who is at fault, the occupants of the motorcycle are most likely to sustain the most serious of injuries. As a result of this added risk of injury, motorcyclists typically must take added precautions to ensure they are not endangering themselves or their passengers. Also, operators of motor vehicles must exercise a reasonable degree of care to ensure they do not negligently cause a motorcyclist to make a sudden change in direction or speed, as these changes can result in drastic consequences.
