2-car accident kills married Festus couple

A two-car accident has resulted in the death of a married couple. According to Missouri police, the car accident occurred one morning in mid June. At the time of the accident, an elderly couple was driving along Highway 61 when a teenage boy ran a red light and struck the driver's side of the couple's vehicle.

Both the male driver, 75, and his 70-year-old wife were wearing their seat belts. Sadly, despite their safety precautions, the couple was pronounced dead at the scene by rescue officials. Meanwhile, the teenage boy faulted in the crash was airlifted to an area hospital where he was listed as being in serious condition.

At the time of the news release, police had not completed the accident report. However, they did publicize their intention to turn the report over to county prosecutors to determine whether or not criminal charges should be brought against the teen driver. There is no indication at this time as to whether other factors played a role in the accident.

Tragic accidents like this one occur all too often in Missouri. In this case, the initial details seem to indicate the car accident was simply the result of one young driver's failure to exercise responsibility behind the wheel. Unfortunately, this apparent failure led to the death of two individuals. There is no silver lining in cases like these, but the family of the deceased couple may find some comfort in knowing that the law provides remedies when driver negligence is proven.
