Truck accident kills Missouri construction worker

A Missouri construction worker was killed when he was struck by a dump truck on July 2. According to Missouri State Police, the accident occurred at around 10:45 a.m. The man was working on a road construction site when the truck accident occurred.

Police have stated that one lane was closed on a major highway due to the road construction that was taking place. The victim was crossing the closed lane in his effort to pick up construction signs that had been placed on the road. While the man was picking up the signs, a dump truck, driven by a 56-year-old Mansfield man, struck the victim with the back of his truck.

The 31-year-old man, a Hannibal resident, was pronounced dead shortly after the accident occurred. Meanwhile, the driver of the dump truck was not hurt. Police have not released any other information as to whether criminal charges will be brought against the operator of the dump truck.

Construction sites on major Missouri highways can be extremely dangerous. This danger is in large part due to motorists who fail to adhere to proper safety precautions such as slowing down and keeping their eyes on the road when traveling through these work zones. A large number of road construction accidents occur due to a motorist's failure to exercise proper care. While the specific details of this fatal accident will likely be sorted out in an official accident investigation, the family of the deceased worker may wish to assess their rights under Missouri law to pursue a wrongful death claim against the truck driver and his employer.
