Missouri driver admits guilt, now faces wrongful death action

A woman has admitted guilt in a criminal court for her role in a fatal car accident that took the lives of three people. The Missouri court accepted the woman's plea and sentenced her to probation for 2 years. The woman now must face a wrongful death civil suit that was filed by the mother of one of the victims. It was not indicated whether additional claims will be made on behalf of the other accident victims.

The woman admitted in court that she had traveled on the wrong side of the road when the accident occurred. At the time of the accident, the woman was on her way to work. Police have stated that they looked into whether distracted driving played a role in the crash but ultimately did not result in further charges.

One victim's family has already filed a wrongful death action against the woman. It was not disclosed as to what damages the family seeks. A trial date for the case has also not been announced.

A fatal accident can change the lives of many Missouri individuals in the matter of seconds. In such tragic cases, the victims' families will face a long road in their attempt to effectively deal with the grief they are forced to confront. In such cases, a family may elect to file a wrongful death lawsuit based upon a claim that the fatality occurred due to the negligent actions of another. In this case, the mother may be able to use evidence of the criminal conviction to prove negligence in the related wrongful death civil claim.
