Wrongful death: Missouri man convicted after DWI crash

A 28-year-old Missouri man has recently been sentenced to 20 years in prison for his involvement in a car crash that killed a 10-year-old girl. He was convicted on two charges of 2nd degree assault and one charge of 2nd degree murder. Alcohol appears to have been a factor in the tragic accident. The man reportedly admitted to causing the fatal crash, and his admission of guilt, along with the conviction on criminal charges, may help the girl's family if they wish to pursue a wrongful death suit.

The head-on collision occurred two years ago on Missouri 37 just south of Butterfield. The girl was airlifted to a hospital in Springfield, where she later died from her injuries. Two others were also injured in the accident: the girl's father, who was driving, and another passenger. The severity of their injuries is not reported, though the injured passenger was flown to a hospital in Joplin.

Originally, the convicted man was charged with three counts of 2nd degree assault. After his case was changed to another county, he entered a guilty plea. It is reported that he had two prior counts of DWI.

When someone faces criminal charges and/or is convicted for his or her involvement in a car accident, it may strengthen the case of anyone wishing to hold that person liable. Injured parties and family members of anyone killed in a car crash have the right to pursue personal injury or wrongful death claims in Missouri in an effort to seek compensation. A successful civil claim can offer much-needed financial assistance and perhaps even closure, which can help those going through a painful time move on with their lives.
