Missouri car accident injures several, kills 1

Being the passenger in a car is essentially like putting one's life in the hands of another. Drivers have a legal obligation to use reasonable care when transporting passengers in their vehicle. If a car accident occurs and passengers or other motorists are injured or worse, a driver may face both criminal and civil consequences. A recent Missouri car accident left several injured and also took the life of an 18-year-old passenger.

The accident occurred on a Sunday afternoon. A 23-year-old driver was in the process of passing another vehicle when the car hit the passenger side of another car. This caused both vehicles to leave the roadway.

The passenger in the 23-year-old driver's car was airlifted from the scene, but died from her injuries the next day. There were two people in the car that was hit, a mother and son. The 45-year-old mother was treated and released from a medical facility. However, her 13-year-old son sustained serious injuries and needed to be transferred to another hospital for his injuries. The driver who was passing the car when the accident took place also suffered injuries and needed medical treatment.

If the driver who was passing another car is found to be culpable for the crash, there may be criminal consequences. Regardless of whatever criminal consequences could apply, the victims who were injured and family of the 18-year-old woman who was killed may have cause to pursue action through a civil complaint. If a complaint in a Missouri civil proceeding were to be successful, the victims and family of the deceased passenger may be awarded damages that could help alleviate any financial strain the car accident may have caused.
