Truck driver pleaded guilty to fatal car accident in Missouri

Trucks on the road can be intimidating just by their sheer size and weight as they travel alongside or come toward vehicles in the opposite lane. Whenever a car and a truck collide on the roadway, the results can be devastating for anyone involved. If there are circumstances that lead to any kind of criminal charges when a car accident occurs, any victim could have an easier time successfully pursuing civil action. Recently, a truck driver pleaded guilty to charges that stemmed from a car accident that took the life of a teenager in Missouri.

The accident occurred in 2013. A 34-year-old man was driving a furniture truck. The truck crossed the center line and collided with a 17-year-old girl’s car. The girl died from injuries sustained in the car accident.

The driver of the truck admitted that he was under the influence of drugs, including marijuana and methamphetamine. The truck was swerving from lane to lane when the crash happened. He was charged with vehicular assault and involuntary manslaughter.

The man pleaded guilty so that he could get a prison sentence of 10 years. While he may have taken steps to resolve the criminal aspect of the car accident, the family of the girl may still pursue civil action. Reportedly, there are civil cases already being pursued related to the accident. In Missouri, a successful civil suit may lead to the awarding of damages that may help a victim or a victim’s family deal with the aftermath of a car accident.
