Passenger allegedly causes Missouri car accident

Whenever a person transports passengers in his or her vehicle, that driver is taking on the legal responsibility to safeguard any and all passengers in that vehicle. When a person is a passenger in a vehicle, he or she also has a responsibility not to hinder the safe operation of that vehicle with his or her own safety and the safety of others in mind. One passenger in Missouri may be facing criminal charges and could possibly face a civil complaint after a recent car accident.

The car accident occurred when a driver and passenger allegedly began arguing. As the two proceeded down the road, the male passenger is believed to have grabbed the steering wheel of the car. The car then crashed.

Both the passenger and driver are 22 years old. Both also suffered serious injuries in the car accident. The police are investigating the incident and report that they wish to file second-degree vehicular assault charges against the man in this incident.

While many people may not think about passenger culpability in a car accident situation, if police determine a passenger's actions contributed to a car accident, criminal charges can lead to serious legal consequences. A driver who was injured by his or her passenger's actions may then be able to seek civil damages in a Missouri civil court. If the driver is successful in this endeavor, he or she could possibly be awarded compensation that could be useful when dealing with medical bills, lost wages or other losses suffered as a result of being involved in a car accident.
