Car accident on Missouri highway kills passenger

Every time a passenger gets into a vehicle, that person is putting his or her life in the hands of the driver. Moreover, the driver is taking on the legal responsibility of operating the vehicle in a safe and reasonably cautious manner. If a passenger is injured or killed in a car accident caused by driver negligence, that passenger -- or the family left behind -- may have legal recourse in civil court to hold the driver responsible for monetary damages. A passenger in a Missouri car accident recently lost his life after the driver lost control of his vehicle.

The accident occurred as a 24-year-old man was behind the wheel and was driving east. He lost control, and the car overturned after hitting an embankment. The driver suffered serious injuries and was airlifted from the scene.

Two passengers, a 24-year-old twin of the driver and another 22-year-old man, were seriously injured in the wreck. The nature and extent of the injuries were not reported. Another 22-year-old passenger died as a result of the crash, though the specific cause of death was not disclosed.

If the family of the deceased passenger decides to pursue monetary damages in a Missouri civil court, that wrongful death claim could result in a monetary judgment. When a family is left behind after a sudden death due to the recklessness or carelessness of another, that family may have to take on the burden on lost wages, medical bills and funeral costs. A successful civil suit may be a family's only means of covering those costs and avoiding financial ruin after a car accident takes a life. In addition, the injured passengers have the right to file personal injury claims against the driver, seeking damages that -- if awarded -- may help to cover their medical bills and other accident-related losses. The victims will also likely look to car insurance coverage as one possible source of recovery for any damages sustained.
