Children with traumatic brain injuries usually go untreated

Many children in Missouri sustain traumatic brain injuries while playing sports. However, most children that hit their heads while playing sports or participating in other recreational activities do not receive medical attention for their injuries. A report published in the peer-reviewed journal Pediatrics estimated that between 1.1 and 1.9 million children and teenagers in the U.S. sustain traumatic brain injuries each year.

The study was conducted by researchers from the University of Washington. The researchers gathered the data that was used to calculate their estimate from three national databases: MarketScan, the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System and the National High School Sports Related Injury Surveillance System. Before the latest research was done, the number of traumatic brain injuries sustained by children was believed to be between 1.6 and 3.8 million, based on information from the 1991 Health Interview Survey.

In addition to the number of children who sustain traumatic brain injuries, the UW researchers estimated how many of these children do not receive any medical care. Researchers believe that up to approximately 1.2 million children aren't treated after sustaining a traumatic brain injury. Health care authorities have recommended that a routine surveillance system should be established for detecting traumatic brain injuries in children.

While often associated with contact sports, a child could incur a brain injury as the result of a car collision or a sudden fall. If it can be determined that the incident was caused by another party's negligence, such as a drunk or distracted driver, a personal injury lawyer could assist victims and their parents in seeking compensation for the losses that have been incurred.
