Aggressive driving car accidents

Aggressive driving behaviors contribute to a lot of serious car accidents in Missouri and across the U.S. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a driver is 'aggressive" if they commit traffic violations that endanger other people or property. A study by the American Automobile Association found that 56 percent of fatal car accidents that occurred between 2003 and 2007 involved aggressive driving behaviors.

The AAA study found that the most common kind of aggressive driving that is involved in fatal car accidents is speeding. Speeding includes driving over the posted speed limit or driving too fast for road conditions. According to the NHTSA, 18.8 percent of fatal automobile accidents in 2014 involved a driver or motorcyclist who was speeding.

Other aggressive driving behaviors that often lead to fatal accidents are drunk and drugged driving, failure to stay in the proper lane, failure to yield the right of way and driving while distracted. In 2014, driving while affected by drugs or alcohol was a contributing factor in 12.3 percent of fatal automobile accidents while failure to stay in the proper lane contributed to 8.5 percent of fatal accidents. There were 3,000 distracted drivers involved in fatal accidents in 2014.

A driver who commits several traffic violations before causing a serious car accident may be charged for criminal counts. In addition to the criminal complaint, the at-fault driver in an accident may face personal injury complaints from the injured victims. A person who has suffered injuries because of a driver's aggressive behaviors may want to talk to a lawyer about filing a personal injury complaint.
