Thousands of trucks taken off the roads for brake issues

Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance inspectors periodically check large commercial trucks in Missouri and around the country for brake system violations and other problems. They paid especially close attention to truck brakes during the nonprofit organization's Brake Safety Week. Between Sept. 11 and Sept. 17, CVSA inspectors placed about 3,900 trucks out of service for safety violations that included 2,352 brake violations.

CVSA representatives announced the results of Brake Safety Week. There were 18,057 commercial vehicles inspected during the week, and about 18 percent of the trucks and 15.8 percent of the trailers that were inspected were found to have anti-lock braking system violations. Inspectors were looking for brake problems like hydraulic fluid leaks, faulty brake system parts and worn out linings.

The CVSA says that brake checks are always a part of the Level I inspections that are conducted on a daily basis by its inspectors, and trucking companies are also expected to regularly check and maintain truck brakes. Brake Safety Week is set aside to give truck drivers and transportation companies an extra reminder about the importance of brake safety. By having one week that is focused on brakes, inspectors have the opportunity to remove thousands of vehicles with dangerous brake issues from the roadways.

Semi truck accidents have the potential to cause catastrophic harm to occupants of smaller and lighter vehicles that are involved in the crash. When it can be determined that the accident was caused by negligent truck maintenance, an attorney might suggest to an injured victim that an advisable method of seeking compensation for medical bills and other losses would be the filing of a personal injury lawsuit against the trucking company.
