Actions to take after a car accident

If a motorist is in a Missouri car accident, there may be several important actions to take if another driver is at fault. First, regardless of who has caused the accident, injured people should be assisted but should not be moved if possible. If the accident is serious, the police may be called.

The person who is not at fault should collect information from the other driver such as name, contact information and insurance policy information. This may be useful if that driver fails to report the accident to the insurance company. It may also be a good idea to document the accident with photographs and witness statements.

Documenting injuries may also be important. People should also contact their own insurance company. This prepares the company in case there is an issue with the insurance company of the driver responsible. For example, that driver's insurance company might argue about who was at fault or not offer much compensation. An injured person's own insurance company might pay the compensation if this happens or may file a lawsuit. An injured person might also file a lawsuit if the insurance company does not.

A person who is injured in a car accident might want to contact an attorney. Some motor vehicle accidents may leave a person with catastrophic injuries and unable to return to work for a long period. In some cases, the injuries could be permanent and life-changing, and compensation could be critical. The attorney may be able to advise as to how to document injuries and how best to respond to the other insurance company.
