Causes of trucking accident

Missouri motorists have good cause to worry about crashes that involve semi trucks. Because of their size and weight, accidents involving large trucks have the potential to cause serious personal injuries and devastating consequences.

The number of large truck accidents that lead to death is rising on an annual basis. There are around 5,000 fatalities and 140,000 injuries each year nationwide in accidents that involve 475,000 large trucks.

Of course, most accidents that involve trucks are caused by the same factors that can spark a crash between smaller vehicles or even bicycles and pedestrians. Distracted driving, drowsy driving and drunk driving are known dangers that can lead to tragedy on the road, no matter what type of vehicles are involved.

While truck drivers are often accused of being unsafe or reckless behind the wheel, around 70 percent of accidents with large trucks have been the fault of automobile drivers. While many of these accidents are caused by obvious dangers like texting while driving or speeding, driving in a truck's blind spot can lead to severe crashes as well.

On the other hand, studies have also shown a sharp correlation between truck accident fatalities and the days of the week. For truckers driving a standard Monday through Friday schedule, Thursdays are the most deadly day with Fridays a close second. This is often attributed to fatigue, stress and frustration after nearly a full week of work. Safety protocols could also drop off near the end of a busy work week.

Occupants of other vehicles who have been injured due to a semi truck accident through no fault of their own can get important advice from a personal injury lawyer. If the accident was the fault of a negligent truck driver, they may be able to recover compensation for their medical bills and other damages suffered as a result of the crash.
