Halloween and driver safety

Many drivers in Missouri know to be careful on the roads due to drunk drivers on certain holidays, like Christmas and New Year's. AAA has issued a warning that drivers should also be careful on Halloween.

Most crashes on this holiday occur between 6 p.m. on October 31 and 6 a.m. on November 1. The age group for most car accident fatalities on Halloween in 2016 was 21 to 34. There were no pedestrians killed in car accidents on Halloween in 2016, which means that trick-or-treating was safer than driving that year.

AAA has offered some tips for drivers who plan to be out on Halloween. Planning who is going to be a designated driver is important before anyone at a party begins drinking. Many people believe they are safe to drive when they are actually over the legal limit, which greatly increases the risk of getting into a potentially fatal drunk driving accident.

Drivers should make sure that they take extra precautions to watch for children and slow down on Halloween. Parents of trick-or-treaters should review safety precautions with their children and make sure that their costumes have reflective gear on them to alert drivers. It's also a good idea for anyone out trick-or-treating to carry flashlights.

Anyone who has been injured by a drunk or negligent driver may want to speak to a personal injury lawyer about filing a claim for compensation. Even a minor car accident can bring significant costs, like medical bills, property damage and lost time from work.

A personal injury lawyer may be able to help injured car accident victims file a claim for damages. Plaintiffs may be able to recover costs for medical bills, lost wages, prescription costs, property damages and other actual expenses as well as damages for pain and suffering.
