Brake Safety Week ends with nearly 5,000 trucks sidelined

Truckers and truck fleet owners in Missouri may remember that the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance held its 2018 Brake Safety Week from September 16 to 22. Inspectors stopped trucks and other commercial vehicles at random as a way to enforce compliance with brake safety guidelines. The CVSA has now come out with the results of this inspection spree.

A total of 35,080 commercial vehicles in the U.S. and Canada were inspected, and of those, 4,955 were placed out of service for brakes violations. The focus of the 2018 Brake Safety Week was on vehicles that require antilock braking systems and how well-maintained they are.

Of the 26,143 air-braked power units requiring ABS that were inspected, 2,176 or 8.3 percent were sidelined. Of the 17,857 trailers requiring ABS that were inspected, 2,224 or 12.5 percent were discovered with ABS violations. Lastly, 234 of the 5,354 hydraulic-braked trucks or 4.4 percent requiring ABS that underwent inspections were found to have violated ABS standards.

The 2017 inspection spree did not last one week but was rather a Brake Safety Day. Though naturally fewer trucks were inspected, the percentage of trucks put out of service was roughly the same as during the 2018 Brake Safety Week: 14 percent compared to 14.1 percent, respectively. Brakes violations composed the majority of out-of-service violations during the CVSA's International Roadcheck, which was in June.

Truckers who fail to maintain their brakes or other truck components will only raise their risk for a crash. Victims of such negligence may want to speak with a lawyer who works in truck accident law to determine if they have a case or not. Truck crashes often leave victims with catastrophic injuries requiring life-long medical treatment, but the lawyer may strive for a settlement with the trucking company that covers these and other expenses. As a last resort, victims might litigate.
